Model Mayhem has deleted my accounts
EDITED TO ADD: While I was typing this, Brian has been posting in the MM forums claiming I did NOT try to contact him. Another mod is parroting this. Not only is that untrue, it's a violation of their OWN RULES to talk about former members who can't defend themselves.EDIT 2: EDIT 2: Did Brian receive my e-mail? I DO have his personal e-mail, and have contacted him there before about site issues. I have copies of replies from him. We've also talked about personal issues via mail. I know I sent it & got no reply. I know the security hole was wide open & being indexed by search engines, and I know someone else was posting it publicly. So to accuse me of malice or making things worse by talking about it publicly is ludicrous, and I have NO reason to lie about contacting them.
So, I'll make this brief as I can. I've been a member at Model Mayhem since shortly after the site started. It's been my primary networking tool since 2005. I've been active in the forums, and in real life with the various community members. I volunteered for the site. At one point I was suggested as a mod, and when that was shouted down by some people the former owner, Tyler, asked me to head the then-forming Gatekeeper program. While I declined that, I did head the unofficial Picture of the Day 18+ contest until it was made official & site-wide, whereupon I continued to run it for some time, devoting many hours to it.
I have made a lot of friends and gotten a lot of great work from the site. I'm going out at exactly 69,000 posts in the forums. With that much talk I've rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, but I've helped a few folks & gotten a lot of "thank yous" too.
Now, after almost 5 years and a lot of time, MM has removed my account. They've been looking for a reason to do so for some time, partly because of the blatant personal animosity some of the site administrators have for me, and partly because my involvement with Model Insider
patently terrifies them.
Yesterday's events finally gave them the excuse. In short form, they screwed up code on their website and opened a MASSIVE security hole. It was open for several hours without anything being said. Then Pat Yuen blogged it & made some tweets about it. Info on the security hole & events is here.
After Pat's tweets & blog I messaged Brian Diaz (the head mod & site admin) directly (I have his e-mail) and let him know. Nothing was done. So I posted some tongue-in-cheek comments on Twitter & MM's Facebook, making sure they would see them. In fairly short order, they took the site down for about 15 minutes, plugged the hole, brought the site back up, then took it back down to fix out of sync servers, then brought it back up again.
It's kind of funny how fast they fixed something they blamed on a hole in Tyler's infamous "spaghetti code" given their usual claims about how hard it is... Brian & Dean Johnson (one of the other site admins) both said the ENTIRE CODE had been gone thru in that brief time to look for more examples of the breach, given that the "block member" feature has been down for some time, allowing, among other things, a KNOWN STALKER to harass at least one model with no action from the mods or the site. I guess something embarrassing to the MM moderators & IB admins (since the breach allowed a peek behind the curtain at their clear disdain for members and lack of ideas about the site's actual operation) is FAR more important to fix than a simple feature needed to stop a model from being threatened by a dangerous individual.
In the midst of all this, Brian & Dean were posting in the forums & to MM's Facebook & Twitter patently lying about the issue, blaming "outsiders" and "hackers" and "malicious individuals" and such. They flatly denied any changes in their code were at issue. As it became clear this was a lie, they backed off those claims on MM but left them uncorrected on Facebook & Twitter. They also began censoring their Facebook, removing not only posts about the truth but any posts from people ASSOCIATED with some of us who told the truth, even if they were old posts that had nothing to do with the situation.
The lies continued in the MM forums, tho, with them making non-credible claims about people using their bug to do more than just look at mod thread titles, locked/hidden threads, members' brig records, and the names of mods who've locked threads. They claimed some members (and strongly insinuated all along that Pat & I were responsible for it) had used the hole to do things like delete peoples' avatars, which was patently crap.
I stayed out of the fight in Site-Related over the MM mess & went on about my business, chatting with friends, setting up a shoot with another MMer for this weekend, discussing professional associations, giving out some anti-scam advice, reporting a questionable account, a usual day on MM.
Then, about an hour ago at 9:30 PM EST, with no warning or discussion, I received this:
"Your account has been removed from Model Mayhem for the following reasons:
Your actions to disseminate the security flaw yesterday through as viral way as possible without making any attempt to alert the moderator or management team is a clear indication that you are not interested in being a productive member of the MM community. We feel it is time for you to seek a presence elsewhere."
That's fine. It's their site, it's their rules. They want to kick me off, they're welcome to. What I WILL NOT stand for, and what I want the members to know, is that they are lying about me AND lying about what happened on the site.
They screwed up the code, code that they could have fixed (as I noted here
, whereupon I was promptly accused
of borderline criminal activity by Brian Diaz) long ago. The speed with which they fixed this breach SHOWS how easily they can manage it.
They lied about what happened, and they're blaming the wrong people for it. This has not only affected me, Pat Yuen was also removed from the site. He has also always been a tireless friend to the community. I will NOT apologize for helping expose a massive failure on the part of a multi-million dollar public company like Internet Brands (MM's owners) to run their site & secure it adequately. I did nothing morally or ethically wrong, and I certainly did nothing criminal.
I am upset & hurt by this. Most of all, I want to say to Brian (who I am sure will see this) that I am TERRIBLY disappointed in you. While we haven't always AGREED we have always been civil and I thought we had mutual respect. I sought you out to let you know when I found someone slandering you, we spoke a few times about meeting in real life to share a beer. I realize you have to defend Internet Brands and Model Mayhem, and I have a REALLY good idea of what's going on behind the scenes there & the pressure you are under. But I tried to do the right thing & let you know about this & was ignored, and then you made this out to somehow be my fault. Removing me from the site, that's business and I'll live. The rest hurt. I'd like at least the decency & courtesy for no more lies to be told about me.
Brian, you have insisted time and again that I work for a competing site. So I guess we’re competitors now. If that’s the way it has to be, then that’s the way it has to be. But then you, of all people, should be aware that posting verifiable untruths about your competition is a little more serious than just kicking someone off of your web site. If this is how it is to be, then I suggest you not only stop, but set the record straight. This situation is of your making and your choice, Brian. I expect better from you.
I am opening this blog up for public comments, but I'm filtering them & tracking IPs, so if any of my detractors out there feel like taking cheap shots you can save your typing.

WRONKLED Magazine call for contributors
WRONKLED Magazine will be returning with its second edition on April 1st 2010 and needs CONTRIBUTORS. Deadline is March 1st 2010.
WRONKLED (www . wronkled . com) is an online parody/spoof/humor magazine lampooning the online model/photographer world. We debuted on April Fool's Day 2009 with a mix of contributions from friends and linked-in parody videos from online.
We're looking to go BIG in 2010, with all new all original content. We need articles, jokes, images, and most especially VIDEOS focusing on the humorous aspects of online networking in the modeling & photography community.
Contributions can focus on cliches in images (train tracks, caution tape, etc), "dead horse" topics like flakes & escorts, stereotypes ("creepy" photographers, "MySpace" models, etc), or any of the other topics that we all love to laugh about. See the first issues for examples.
We would especially appreciate some non-US contributions! Perhaps, for instance, some of our British cousins might throw in some items relating to the "I"m a photographer, not a terrorist!" campaign.
This is not a paid project, we're putting our time & resources in to hosting & setup. Wronkled is affiliated with Model Insider, and we're planning this issue as part of a major push for MI with advertising & publicity that should bring you & your contributions fantastic exposure. Plus it's a great chance to have a little fun! If this goes well we're looking to make this a quarterly project.
Anyone who's on DeviantArt, please fav up the news article there? http://news.deviantart.com/article/107081/

The truth behind Wronkled & call for contributors!
So, as many of you might've seen in my journal or my post here Wednesday, some friends (mainly the staff from Model Insider
) & I launched a satirical website called "Wronkled Magazine"
as an April Fool's Day joke.
We were overwhelmed by the positive response and all the contributions from people who saw & read it. We've decided that as long as people are reading & laughing we're going to keep it running as an "Onion" style look at the whacky world of online modeling & photography and we'd like YOUR help.
There're a couple of things you folks can do to help if you enjoy it. First, read "Wronkled"! We're tracking usage & as long as people are reading we'll keep going. Second, we need contributors... if you have photos, cartoons (illustrations), videos, or stories you'd like to submit send them in to firstname.lastname@example.org. third, TELL YOUR FRIENDS... we need readers, so DIGG it and Delicious it and blog about it. Fourth, if you're on DeviantArt visit my DA news article
about it and Fave the article so it stays visible in the rankings.
BTW, due to popular demand we launched a Cafe Press store
with Wronkled clothes & stuff, and some contributors might receive free Wronkled clothes. :)
Regardless of whether you choose to help or participate in any other way we hope you enjoy Wronkled. Whether you're part of the internet model/photographer community or not there's plenty to laugh at.

New online model/photographer magazine!
Hey all, my friend Chris Ambler got made editor of a new online publication aimed at models & photographers, Wronkled Magazine
, and the first issue came out today!
I was asked to contribute to it, and I put up an article on how useful an unobtrusive model's escort can be for making a great shoot:A Photographer's Field Guide to Unobtrusive Escorts
This is not a joke, it's a real online magazine. Click on the links & check it out (I promise, no RickRolls or anything like that). The magazine's still taking submissions for content & might even pay a little out to contributors!!
Let me know what you think! We worked hard on this!

Looking for interesting people to photograph.
My name is Rachel. I attend the photo program at DSC and I'd like to find some interesting people who wouldn't mind being photographed in their natural surroundings. I am not looking for models for portraits right now...just certain types of people.
I am looking for young couples (gay/straight), tattooed people (covered), foreign people, people comfortable being nude, bicycle riders, pet owners (and their pets), unique looking people (extremely long hair, albino, freckley, redheads, you name it.)
If you or anyone you know fits any of these categories and would like to help me out sometime let me know!

Last chance for free VIP at Model Insider!!!
Happy Valentine’s Day all!
I’m posting this because we’re almost ready for a full public launch at Model Insider
!!! Anyone who joins before midnight PST on Valentine’s day gets free permanent VIP status, with extra photos & galleries as well as other privileges.
The site will ALWAYS have free membership, but we’ll roll out some paid access specials… early adopters will get access to those. So for those of you who aren’t members yet this’s the time to join! Get in while the site’s small and have all the privileges when it grows.
PLUS!!!!!!!! As those who’ve already joined know we’re hosting photo contests. Besides the daily contests we have two themed Valentine’s contests (one 18+, one not) with REAL PRIZES.
All our contests will start giving prizes out as the site gets going.
If you’re a Florida CAPErs photographer or model please read all the way down for big news!
Quick recap: Last month Chris Ambler, Craig Seay, and I launched Model Insider, a new model-photographer (and related professions like MUAs) networking site. We’ve been slowly bringing people on board as we test out the site, add features, and fix bugs. We’re trying to offer features that none of the other sites out there have (like THE most advanced classifieds systems with things like integrated casting calls & travel notices, smart travel notices that don’t hit everyone in a state when you’re only going to part of it, “tour” features for people who’re traveling, etc) and that a lot of people have been asking for. We’re responsive to our members and we add requested features as fast as possible.
For those of you who came onboard last month when we started, if you looked around and haven’t been back please take another look. We’ve improved the graphics layout & the navigation between the forums & portfolios. We’ve added in a TON of new features, with more coming. Some major editions: We’ve started creating specialty lounges, areas where people with specific knowledge can answer questions and share what they know. So far we have a pro fashion/commercial forum hosted by Roger Talley/TxPhotog (author of http://www.newmodels.com
), an alt model/photography area co-managed b Engel Schrei and Eric Tragedy/Fotografia Fantastique, and a nude modeling area run by Iona Lynn/Mariah Carle. We’ll be adding more of these. We’re also establishing a fantastic list of members who’re willing to act as resources to one another for things like mentorships. The site now has short links to your profile and soon you’ll be able to change it to your name.
So I would encourage all of you to sign up if you haven’t, and to come back & look around and kick the tires if you have. It won’t take anything but a few minutes of your time. Best case, the site takes off and you have free super status. Worst case, the site doesn’t suit your needs and you’ve wasted 3 minutes. If you like what you see please tell your friends… we’ve added a “who referred me” field to the sign up form, and we’re working out some prizes for whomever has the most referrals for sign-ups (NO need to fill my name out, I don’t get prizes LOL). Just let them know about the Valentine’s deadline!
*NOTE FOR Florida CAPErs members: The second caper is in ONE MONTH, and MI is an official sponsor. We’ll be having prizes & giveaways sponsored by MI at the event. Look for the CAPErs announcement in your mailbox this weekend. Hopefully MI will be taking part in events all over the US!
Please do keep in mind the site’s still under construction, so if you sign up & find a bug PLEASE let us know here: http://www.modelinsider.com/forum/index.php?f=13&sid=617dc1d8d1754642a170744b61d1af59&rb_v=viewforum
If you have any ideas to make the site BETTER please let us know here: http://www.modelinsider.com/forum/index.php?f=18&sid=617dc1d8d1754642a170744b61d1af59&rb_v=viewforum
The number one complaint is site speed, it’s a bit slow because it’s running in full debug mode with no cache (Chris told me that, don’t ask me what it means), but we’re approaching full launch and when we’re ready it will BLAZE.
Side note, if you're one of the folks who got multiple e-mails about this from me last night I am VERY sorry. My mail server had a fit with my outlook connection and kept telling me my mail couldn't be sent. Apparently some people got my notice 4 or 5 times and I apologize.

New networking site for models & photographers!
Hey folks, there's a detailed post in my journal about a new site that's under construction and offering additional options for models & photographers looking to network.
With Model Mayhem's issues it might be a good thing to have a backup, and if any of you participated in or are familiar with the very popular Pic of the Day 18+ contest, it's moving to the new site.
I don't want to bog the community down with the huge post, if you're interested it's in my journal here:http://slephoto.livejournal.com/14138.html Current Mood: excited

I have a pertinent question for the members!
Do you have a link to your website that you'd care to share? If you have a banners & links page are you interested in swapping banners & links with the other members?

Hi folks, just wanted to check in & welcome a few new members.
I'm still here maintaining the group but I meant what I said about this not being a vanity project just for me where I'd be promoting myself.

I've been busy & have some new work coming, and have work hanging in the Fringe Festival's Visual Fringe show, what're the rest of you up to? Current Mood: calm

Welcome, let's do some intros please :-)
Welcome to our 2 new members koda_koda_koda
Since we have several new folks, I'd like to see everyone introduce themselves & let us know what your involvement in photography around central Florida is (is, are you a photographer, a model, etc). Please also note the requests for input in my earlier posts!
I'll start. I'm James, I'm based out of Orlando but an beachside & in Tampa all the time. I'm 37 & have been doing photography for 18 years plus studying it in school prior to that. I've worked in commercial portraiture & event photography and an currently using my photography skills in conjunction with my work in the wine & spirit biz.
I'm working hard to build up a more regular business, do more art shows, and develop sales of my print work as well as some calendar & poster projects (plus a few tarot decks I'm working on) online.
I'm also interested in building up local networks where we can support each other with referals, studio space available, shows or event news, and other resources.
That's me in a nut shell, how about everyone else? (please post your stuff as new entries, not as comments here!) Current Mood: busy

Welcome to new members
Just a quick post to say I'm behind on posting since the computer's in the shop, this's from the laptop.
I want to welcome our new members oh_darling
(who is also brand new to Florida), both models i the Polk County area.
I also wanted to note that there is another group here, centralfl_photo
, with a similar name. It's a great group but it's focused on photographers & I'd like this group to focus on all areas of photography.
Glad to see we have some new folks joining, and I'd still like to hear some of the feedback I asked for in the last post. The group needs your help to grow!
I know from ModelMayhem and OneModelPlace that we can all help each other by networking. Let's get something going!

Re-starting Central Florida Photo!
Hi folks! The founder of this community left LJ a few months ago & abandoned the community. I was an original member via my personal LJ, james_the_evil1
. I hated to see the group die, since more networking is always good for us, so I petitioned LJ to be given ownership of the group.
I'm going to work to grow the membership & actively promote this community as a resource for people involved in all aspects of photography in & around Central Florida. Photographers, models, stylists, MUAs, students, hobbyists, and more are welcome. Skill level is not an issue, nor is your status as pro-semi-pro, or hobbyist. Your interest & involvement in photography is what matters.
I'm working on more specific rules for what'll be acceptable in posts, but here's some things I'd like to see:
I need HELP from you folks to succeed here! First and foremost this group needs PARTICIPATION!
- YOUR PHOTOS! If you're the model, photographer, MUA, or stylist, as long as you have permission to use the work & credit people involved, show us what you're doing! Please see rules in profile on posting.
- EVENTS! Is there a show upcoming that we can enter? Is there a show or an opening where your work is being displayed? Give us the details!
- JOBS! Are you looking for people to photograph you/be in your photos/assist with your photos? Let us know!
- STUFF! Are you buying/selling/looking for clothes, makeup, equipment? Post about it. NO SPAMMING, don't post any notices more than once a month.
I don't want this to be a vanity group or one-man show where it's all me blathering, I have my own LJ for that. So please, post! Second, we need to get the word out & bring members in!
I'm going to look thru LJ and recruit folks, if you know people who'd fit in or be interested here tell them about the group. I'm going to promo this comm in my LJs and on my website & post notices on Model Mayhem & Model Place. Please share the info anywhere you can! Thirdly, I need YOUR input! What would YOU like to see here?
What kind of info is helpful? What do you NOT want seen in this community?
A final note, I am BROKE from capital outlay on new equipment at the moment so I set the group up as a Plus account. I hate the ads but wanted to be able to post polls & such. If you all find them too bothersome I can go back to basic, but if anyone wants to help the group out by pitching in for a Paid Account we'll love you forever! Current Mood: hopeful

New Goth vampire photos!
First pic from the new shoot from this weekend!
Part of this set was following Tiffany transforming MidNite in to her vampire little sister. MidNite did a GREAT job playing dead in this one, she came out looking like a life-sized Living Dead Doll. Let me know what you think!
MidNite is ModelMayhem # 100713 and ModelPlace # 8648
Tiffany is OMP # 254592 and Model Mayhem # 85778
